Oldbury Benefice

A message from our Rector

Becoming a Christian is always a free choice and nobody can ever be pushed into it. Being a Christian is about believing in the Easter message. Easter isn't about cute bunny rabbits and chocolate chicks. It's far better than that. Easter isn't about the greening of the earth and newly born animals. It's far better than that. Easter is the commemoration of a Cosmic battle that took place in our world between the powers of good and evil, and Jesus won the battle.

Our Benefice Vision

Our Vision is of five united and interdependent Christian communities working together to grow the Church in the Oldbury Benefice.

It will be a Church which is caring and welcoming, following the life and teachings of Jesus.

It will be responsive to the needs and aspirations of our community.

It will be a Church that will thrive and grow as people acknowledge its importance in their lives.

The Oldbury Community Chest

The Oldbury Community Chest is a discretionary fund to help folk in need throughout our five parishes. Some circumstances arise out of unforeseen crises, others are less serious. People have received a small gift or a bunch of flowers for the birth of a new baby or surgery, whilst others have received such things as a new bed to help cope with a disability.

If you know of a person or situation that might be in need of support, or indeed if you wish to contribute to the chest please have a word with Philip.

Heddington School

Heddington School are planning an event to make a mosaic with the children and people from the community. The school thought it would be nice to offer the opportunity to join them to the congregation at St Andrew’s. They plan to run the project in November and it will be in school time. "We would plan the mosaic and make it together, children and community working alongside one another. The mosaic would be placed in the sensory garden which will be constructed during the spring." If you are interested and would like more details please contact the school.

Nativity Project

On Wed 14th December, 4 p.m., the Oldbury Benefice is welcoming Bishop Nicholas to bless a life size Nativity on the A4 at Cherhill. It will be sited outside the Divine Cafe for two weeks, hopefully raising money for the Children's Society. Do go and visit the Nativity and join us for this event.

On a lonely hill in Wiltshire

Our Easter pilgrimage was a particular success again this year after a service at Cherhill the cross led the procession to the top of the downs near the Moument.

Jenny Parrish

Another Special Occassion

Another special occassion was marked during Evensong on Sunday 29th May when Jenny Parrish was presented with a magnificent bouquet of flowers to mark a particularly important milestone birthday. We're not giving away any secrets when we say that the occassion was not Jenny's 21st birthday, but it was a significant one.

Fortunately for Yatesbury, age is no deterrent to Jenny as she devotes so much of her time to working on behalf of the community. Let's just say that her energy and commitment remain as strong now as they ever were. We all benefit from the contribution she makes to village life.
