The Benson Memorial Hall

The original Compton Bassett Village Hall was located in the small field behind and to the east of the War Memorial and built of timber. This was demolished in 19?? and the new building was erected as a memorial to John Benson

The hall had toilets with a store room above and the main hall with a stage at the far end. The kitchen and bar area, together with the committee room was added in 19??. Although no full time licence was ever held for the premises, licences have usually been granted for specific events when required by the appropriate authorities. With the stage being the venue for the twice a year offering by the amateur dramatic society CHADS, several events during the year by acts arranged by Rural Arts in Wiltshire (RAW) and various other events laid on for the village a much larger storage and dressing area was added to the rear. It can now claim to be one of the better village halls in Wiltshire particularly for a village with such a low level of population.

The hall and the lawns surrounding it are the venue for many village events throughout the year, largely benefitting the various charitable organisations of the village. The church fete is an annual event with competitions and stalls with some involving the entire village from one end to the other.
