Hills Waste Transfer Station Planning Aplication

Hills had an enormous opportunity to bring us, in the village and the surrounding area, on side and we have to ask the question, "What happened?". The answer is easy, simply nothing!

Many attended a lengthy meeting in the village hall early this summer where much was promised and many concerns listened to by the Hills representative, but so far we have seen nothing to address these concerns on their website as promised. Now the application has been submitted for the new facility and your parish council needs your support. A leaflet is being prepared at the moment and will be distributed through your doors over the coming week which highlights the views of the Parish Council and their recommendations. We hope to have a copy of the leaflet and a previous one available soon on the site.

There is a comment form on the Wiltshire Council website where you can register your opposition to the scheme, if you choose, and it can be found easily by following this link.

If you are of a mind to oppose this scheme, now is the time to do something. Once planning permission has been granted it is too late! Your parish council needs you!

The Villages Magazine

Our Villages Magazine has come up trumps! Entered into the National Parish Magazine competition against many other great magazines from all over the country.

"The Villages' came first in Wiltshire and was particularly commended by judges for being "a magazine with a good variety of content."

Chief editor Paul Mackie said, "We decided that we wanted the magazine to appeal to non-churchgoers, to be more entertaining with quizzes, stories and feature articles, but still with the Christian content."

Our heartfelt congratulations go to Paul and his team.

Your blue topped bin will be delivered soon for the collection and recycling of plastic bottles and cardboard. The first collection will be on 19th October and will be fortnightly thereafter. The bins should be left where you would normally leave your green bins or your black recycling boxes. The types of plastic bottles they are after is very specific, for instance, yes please to yoghurt drink bottles and no thanks to yoghurt pots. Please read carefully the leaflet which should be landing through your doors any day soon. For further details please go to Wiltshire Council website.

The Last Hercules to leave Lyneham

Four Hercules aircraft, such a familiar sound and sight in the skies above Compton Bassett were the last planes to leave RAF Lyneham at 10:30 BST today, 1st July 2011. They were seen yesterday flying in formation over the village as they planned for today's ceremony. Lyneham has been the home of the planes which have earned themselves the nickname "Fat Albert" since 1967 until today due to restructuring and cost saving from the government cut backs have distated that the base should close completely in 2012 and transfer operations to Brize Norton. In the ceremony, station commander Gp Capt John Gladstone said "It will be a very sad day for everyone at Lyneham but it's just a new chapter in the history of the Hercules." as he boarded the last plane to leave.

Compton Bassett Parish Council Public Meeting

The meeting, convened by Parish Council Chairman Pete Szczesiak, he explained that the meeting was to hear about the plans by Hills Waste to enlarge the recycling facility at Lower Compton. The meeting was passed to Hills representative Andrea Pellegram who explained that the eu requirement placed upon our government over landfill and recycling was moving inexorably towards a policy of maximum recycling and this was going to require greater recycling facilities locally. Speed Watch!!

Speeding motorists through our village is a big problem and although mercifully there have been no serious accidents, the problem shows no signs of going away without some kind of action. After lobbying by the parish council on your behalf a speed survey was carried out between 3rd and 11th August.
What to do now?

The Phone Box

The phone box, once the property of BT, has, like so many around the country, fallen into disuse with the advent of the ubiquitous mobile phone and is now in a state of disrepair. BT has sold it to us and it is now the property of the village. We now need to find a suitable use for this iconic piece of street furniture. It has been established that there is now a viable supply of electricity to the phone box but we need to find a suitable use for it. Currently, the favourite suggestion is to use it as a book share point, but we are still seeking any other ideas. If you have any suggestions please let one of the parish council know.

The Village Fete

A slightly overcast day greeted the village fete but that didn't dampen the atmosphere at this annual event. With 120 adults through the gate, plus children and stall holders etc it was well attended again this year. The Calne Town Silver Band added it's usual sense of timelessness to the proceedings and with extra stalls and amusements this year that we haven't seen before it was a lovely way to spend and afternoon. The money raised towards church funds was £1300.00 which was a good effort all round.

War Memorial

There is a long awaited hand rail being fitted to the steps up to the War Memorial and parish councillor Mr. David Coward has been asked to oversee it's erection. If you have any thoughts or concerns on the matter please see him and let him know.

White Horse

New Signage at The White Horse

Danny & Tara Adams, Landlord and Landlady of The White Horse have commissioned new signage from Wadworths Brewery and went to see the work for the first time. "We have signed and datedthe main name board in the corner so that in years to come people will be able to answer the question who was at the pub when that was done", said Tara.
